Maryanne Nicholls
Overview
The sculptor, Maryanne Nicholls builds ceramic vessels which arise from rapid sketches which inform these larger than life sculptures. Black clay glazed in white glaze is a signature riff of Nicholls.
Based in Aldeburgh in Suffolk, Maryanne Nicholls study of anatomy is central to her practice. Starting with rapid sketches which then inform her larger-scale drawings, paintings and of course, sculptures. Nicholls layers her work with spontaneous mark-making to capture the movement and physicality of a subject, be it the human form or the flowers that grow in her garden.
