Clifford & Rosemary Ellis

Overview

Husband and wife duo Clifford and Rosemary Ellis Married in 1931 after meeting at the Regent Street Polytechnic. They formed an artistic partnership designing posters and book jackets with visual inspiration coming from their vast love for the British countryside. The bold ebullient use of colours used made their works distinctively recognisable.

The General Post Office, Shell, and The Empire Marketing Board were just a few clients for their posters. They signed their posters C&RE, their initials being in alphabetical order making them readily detectable. They later moved to Bath in 1936 where Rosemary taught art at the Royal School for Daughters of Officers of the Army in Lansdown. Whilst Clifford became an Assistant at the Technical college and later promoted to Head of the Bath School of Art.
