Chica Seal

Overview

Chica Seal (b. 1991, Lisbon) is a British artist whose practice explores the female perspective through looking at historic references including mythology, medieval folklore, storytelling and popular culture to create her paintings.

Seal completed her BA Fine art Painting at Brighton University in 2015 after completing an art foundation at Falmouth University 2011. Chica lives and works in Somerset.

In her practice she uses charcoal and oil paints, often drawing the image several times before she begins a painting. She likes to be totally invested in the concept of the painting and often works in series. She has experimented in Printmaking, Stone Carving, and currently she is making sculptures from terracotta.

Chica uses her own experience as a woman, by reacting to the past misrepresentation of women. Looking at contemporary culture and history help inform her practice, researching to compile narratives which begin the process of image making.

There are recurring themes and motifs that spread throughout the work, as well as the strong use of colour and definite use of line. Artists such as Nancy Spero, Sophie Von Hellermann, Lee Miller and Mamma Andersson have been integral references to her practice.
