Jake Garfield

Overview

Working primarily with printmaking. His work reflects on the nature of artifice, selfhood and the act of making.

Jake Garfield (b. 1990) is a North London based artist, known for his meticulous mark-making in hues of earthy greens and browns. Man Wrestling an Angel, 2022 is a three-meter diptych in response to Jacob Epstein’s alabaster sculpture, Jacob and the Angel, 1940. Garfield carves this epic tussle by abstracting the Old Testament tale into a two-tone feast for the eyes. This labour intense mark-making is a beautiful balance of opposites with cuts to the wood in varying angles - rhythms.

Jake Garfield has an MA in Printmaking from The Royal Drawing School and a BA in Fine Art from Brighton University. Prizes include the Printmaker’s Council Award (2016), The Durham Wharf Award (2015) and the Royal Drawing School Printmakers Prize (2013). Jake exhibits in the UK and internationally, including shows at El Segundo Museum Of Art (California), Christies (London & New York) and Mercer Chance Gallery (London). His work is in collections of The British Museum, V&A and the Fitzwilliam Museum among others.
