Tom Heywood

Tom Heywood is a designer and maker based in Penzance, Cornwall, specialising in handcrafted furniture, sculpture and interior pieces. Working primarily with wood, he combines traditional and contemporary woodworking techniques to create distinctive and often sculptural forms. 

In 2022, Tom completed a project carving large-scale figures from Ash and Beech stumps that had fallen during Storm Eunice, Using his fascination with human depictions and surrounding nature

The figures that Tom Heywood creates are carved directly from tree stumps, he is drawn to the human form and its relationship with the landscape. 

“My work often begins where nature has left off, using fallen trees and storm-felled timber as the starting point for new forms. The pieces I create represent my passion for the natural world, I take a huge amount of inspiration from my surroundings.

Wood is my chosen medium due to the natural aesthetics of the material, it’s flexibility and it’s sustainable properties.”

Heywood transforms the timber at the end of his life cycle into sculptural pieces that feel rooted in connection to the places they came from; its a process that, when returned to the landscape, feels very powerful.
