Liorah Tchiprout
'They're ready to leave a psychological space and enter an interior and a landscape, and that's what I'm interested in, taking them on this kind of journey.'
Born in 1992 in London, Tchiprout is a figurative artist working in the mediums of paint, drawing, and dolls. Creating the dolls is central to her practice, as the small, wooden forms serve as models for portraits and scenes in her work. The self-referential figures wear all handmade clothing and sometimes even have real human hair. The setting may even be in a doll’s house, but the figures are often shadowy, gestural, or in conversation with another character. The effect is something quite lifelike but also surreal—existing in a realm that is just slightly imaginary, even though it is real. Fantastically intimate whether they are painted, etched, or a monoprint, the works are informed by Tchiprout’s Jewish heritage and Yiddish literature. Tchiprout is represented by Pippy Houldsworth Gallery.
