After serving in the Second World War, Cliffe studied painting and lithography at Bath Academy of Art, where he later taught between 1950 and 1981. Cliffe enjoyed a long career, exhibiting regularly in London and across Britain, as well as internationally alongside many iconic British artists of the twentieth century including Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, and Ben Nicholson.
