ALEX HEIM : HORSE PLAY: An Exhibition at 8 Holland Street Flagship, St James Park

24 April - 7 June 2025

8 Holland Street is thrilled to announce ALEX HEIM: HORSE PLAY. An exhibition of

featuring a series of paintings and drawings at 8 Holland Street’s Flagship Gallery,

St James’s Park.

HORSE PLAY aims to pin down the artist’s own experiences of growing up. As a painter, Heim reflects on his internal expressions and understanding of the external – articulated through playful and living forms.

Heim’s practice often depicts relationships, whether with place or person, seeking to capture the intricacies of human experience beyond mere physical form. The
title HORSE PLAY refers to the boisterous and naïve nature in this series of work, confessing the painters unaffected attitudes towards the gaiety of painting. The figurative works, often exploring themes of sentimentality, nature, and human nature, distil emotion and relationship into form. For Heim, painting is the child-like suspicion for life. He believes that good art is produced from a feeling or desire for truth.

British painter, Alex Heim has been taught to focus on dynamism, context and how work is interpreted. He offers a unique perspective within the contemporary art landscape with his interdisciplinary practice. Heim’s paintings are rooted in Somerset, where he grew up. The rural landscape and its complexities inform much of his work, as a way for him to make the problems or questions we have about life, his own.

Heim’s painting ‘Boy in Ladies Clothes’ was selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2023. This is Alex Heim’s first solo exhibition with 8 Holland Street.
