CHARLIE SHEPPARD : SOUTH FACING : An Exhibition at 8 Holland Street Bath Gallery
8 Holland Street is thrilled to announce CHARLIE SHEPPARD : SOUTH FACING . An exhibition of mosaic works at 8 Holland Street BATH Gallery. Showcasing a new body of work including tiled artworks, furniture and large scale murals.
The exhibition’s title ‘South Facing’ nods to the heliotropic behaviour of certain plants; when they turn their faces to follow the sun’s movement throughout the day. His floral mosaic characters splay to the edges of their intended frames, dance in a shimmering pattern of shards and display lengthy stems elegantly arching over from one canvas to an entirely new one.
“I try to use organically cracked tile pieces as they lie, celebrating every crack and blemish. These become tools to draw with, informing the visual story of the artwork as it happens, rather than fashioning and tweaking individual pieces into a certain shape to fit a pre-determined design.” — Charlie Sheppard (July 2025)
From the choice of colours, botanicals, and personalities/characteristics of the subjects, this show is a joy-filled celebration of the garden that Charlie Sheppard grew up in, in Bath itself.
Charlie Sheppard (b. 1988) is based in London. His practice focusses on mosaics, working across physical ceramic mosaics and large scale murals, all linked by their celebration of colour, shape and form.
Sheppard’s process challenges the boundaries of the mosaic art form, aiming to create loose, raw, energetic motifs within his work that provoke an interesting tension with the traditional, rigid, precision approach to mosaic creation.
Previous collaborations include: Paul Smith, The Conran Shop and Orlebar Brown. Sheppard’s work has been exhibited or permanently installed in London, Los Angeles, Phuket and Palma, with upcoming installations later this year in Miami and Mexico.
