Victor Pasmore

Victor Pasmore (1908-1998) abandoned visually representative painting midway through his career. Instead he focused purely on the structural, abstracted works which have come to define him as an artist and architect.

Pasmore would attend evening art classes whilst working for ten years as a clerk in the civil service. During this time he had his first solo exhibition, in 1933, and in the following years established his own art school, dedicating his time to teaching for nearly twenty-five years. His abstract works from the 1960s onwards - especially those on paper - are of bright and undefined shapes, they are unconstrained by the space allotted to them, splattered and streaked with lines that break out from the bold masses around them. In so many ways, they mirror Pasmore's own distinct departure from the realms of tradition.
